  Students new and old,
I hope you are having a great summer and creating experiences and memories that will be great to write about in the fall. I am really enjoying spending time with my family . We fill our days with laughs , books , swimming  , and exploration .  I can't wait to share with you some of the great books I am reading this summer and hope you will do the same. We are about to start reading The Red Pyramid has anyone read it? Is it as good as the Percy Jackson books?  Other than that I am really exploring books with a nature theme authors like Scott O'Dell and Jean Craighead George
have caught my attention, but really there are so many. I am hoping to interest you all in all least one of these books. Do you have one you can recommend?

Remember you do need to keep reading this summer. Below is the letter given to the students about the summer reading.  If you need to see the documents explaining the summer reading look on the right of the school homepage http://www.johnreadps.org/

Enjoy your summer. We don't want it to go too quickly, but I do look forward to seeing you.

Dear Students and Parents:

John Read Middle School will participate in a summer reading program. Students will be required to read at least two books, complete an assignment for these books, and participate in the Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The enclosed documents contain all the information that students will need to participate. This includes a reading brochure with the assignment for each grade level as well as a letter from the State of Connecticut explaining the Governor’s Reading Challenge. Finally, to participate in the challenge, students simply need to record all the books that they read during the summer using the journal provided.

When school begins in the fall, students’ reading assignments will be collected by language arts teachers along with reading journals. Reading tallies will also be sent to the Governor’s Office. Special honors and awards are given to schools with exceptional reading performance.

Please accept this challenge and enjoy the adventures you read about, as well as those you experience and create during the summer months. Check the JRMS website for the summer reading brochure.

Sincerely,
Nancy Weber, Reading Consultant
Evelyn Reeve, Library Media Specialist
Kerry McKay, Writing Specialist
