Welcome to

Miss Edwards’

3rd Grade!

RoOm 240 NeWs!!!

In reading, we have begun Ramona Quimby, Age 8, and we are using the text to explore more deeply how readers make connections.
In writing, students completed their self-portraits and autobiographies, and they are going to begin writing narratives based on The Mysteries of Harris Burdick
In math, students are wrapping up a unit on money. We will be moving on to more work with multiplication and division.
In science, students tested types of paper to see which was most absorbant.  They will be designing their own experiments to test the absorbancy of various paper towel brands.
In social studies, students continue to work on their country brochures using Microsoft Publisher, and we will be returning to some with with map skills.

Students have been working extremely hard for their first time ever taking the CMTs!  They've been asking wonderful questions and have come to the realization that it tests things they alredy know...imagine that! :)
When CMTs wrap up next week, students will be happily return to a normal school schedule.  Weekly spelling will resume, and we will begin our core novel, Ramona Quimby Age 8, in reading.

Students have begun learning about Non-Fiction as a genre and its text features.  They will soon begin exploring Fact VS. Opinion.  Students are working on recognizing the main idea of a passage, giving a passage an appropriate title based on the main idea, and supporting the main idea with 3 or more details from the text.  In addition, students continue to work on building stamina during their independent reading times and continue to practice the comprehension strategies we focused on earlier in the year.

Students are begining to explore character traits and feelings, in an effort to better connect to the text and understand what the character is experiencing.  Please encourage your child to identify places where the character in their independent book is demonstrating a specific trait or experiencing a certain emotion.

Students have been working on Summarizing a text to monitor their comprehension of the important story elements.  Please encourage your child to orally summarize after completing a chapter of text.  Remind them to S.W.B.S.A.!

Students have been working hard to practice some of their new reading strategies in their independent reading.
Please talk to your child about visualizing, questioning, and inferring.  Encourage them to be actively practicing these strategies during their nightly reading.
(...as well as decoding words they do not know, using context clues to figure out the meanings of unknown words, and identifying story elements.)
