I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing spring break! The children have returned to school energized for learning!

Reading this month is all focused around our core novel, Ramona Quimby, Age 8. The children laugh out loud while we read and discuss this book! The students reflect on each chapter in a variety of ways, including, making connections, predictions, summarizing, and vocabulary word work. While practicing to use the dictionary and thesaurus the children are building their vocabulary and word use. This book is part of a great series, written by Beverly Cleary. Encourage your child to explore this series if they are enjoying this book!
In Writing, we are celebrating National Poetry Month! We are reading and writing a variety of poems and poets. Bruce Lansky and Shel Silverstein are amoung the class favorites! Additionally, we will be beginning our first Non-Fiction writing project. This will be a five paragraph report on the non-fiction book the children just finished in small groups.
In Math, we just wrapped up a mini-unit on algebra. Students worked hard to balance equations, understand order of operations and solve problems algebraically. We are beginning a new unit on money! The children are very excited to use the calculators to subtract and add money. The children will be creating ad books for their own shops that will be used for a variety of money activities. Please continue to study multiplication and division facts each week!
In other news ...
*During computers we are continueing to write weekly letters to our new KeyPal. The children are very excited to be able to check their "emails" and reply to their new friend. Additionally, we have been typing in Word and practicing how to use the cut and paste features.
*During Science we just wrapped up our Matter unit by completing an experiment about dissolving substances. Our next area of focus will involve the students creating their own experiment after given only a few materials!
*Our HOTS period has ended, however, our final project is still underway! We will be working with a fourth grade class to test their skills on using homophones! The children are true experts in this area!
Thank you Mr. Cooper for helping us achieve this task!
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
