Spring Ahead!

MATH
In math, we are learning about elapsed time and coin counting.  We have been playing a game called "Show me the money!" In this game, we roll two die to make a two-digit number.  We must then create this amount using coins but we must use as many quarters as possible.  We are also collecting class data and creating pictographs and line plots.

Weekly math fact skill: Doubles +1 subtraction (13 - 6, 13 - 7)

READING WORKSHOP
We are learning how readers read non-fiction.  We are learning to identify all of the elements of non-fiction (headings, table of contents, index, glossary, photographs, charts and graphs, labels, and captions).  We are using these elements to help us learn facts about subjects like animals, community workers, the food pyramid, and our earth.  We are also reading biographies to learn about famous people.

WRITING
We have finished writing elaborative detail pieces using artwork created by orphaned children at the Kasisi Children's Home in Zambia, Africa.  The artwork is being sold to raise money for the children at Kasisi.  Each student has chosen a piece of artwork and is using their five senses to describe it.  This is a project that is very near and dear to the students.

We are  currently working on story beginnings, endings, and suspense!

GRAMMAR
We are revising our writing for correct punctuation and capitalization.  We have created flip books of proper nouns and common nouns and plural nouns and singular nouns.

SPELLING
Students will generally have a pre-test on Mondays and spelling homework will be assigned the same day. Spelling homework is always due on Thursdays. Students should be practicing their words on a daily basis. Please take advantage of Spelling City, a spelling website located on my resources page.

SCIENCE
We are currently learning about the nutritional needs of human beings.  We will complete a nutrition journal the week of March 12.  We will input our data into an excel spreadsheet and analyze our nutritional intake compared to that recommended by the food pyramid.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are currently learning about communities.  We have created our own suburban community, similar to Easton, on a bulletin board in our classroom.  We will soon begin to learn about map skills through our Flat Stanley project. Our Scholastic News will supplement our science and social studies curriculum.

Please see my resources page for academic websites that your children can access from home. Upcoming events will generally be posted on my website for your convenience. Please make sure your children are getting plenty of sleep and eating a healthy breakfast. We want to make sure we can do our best work each day!

Warm Regards,
Miss Barrows
