Welcome back!!!
I am so excited to begin a fun new school year with a great group of students. I hope you all are ready to have fun and learn a lot!
MATH
We will begin the school year by reviewing place value, odd and even numbers, coin counting, and time concepts. Each lesson will be structured to provide for a variety of learners.
READING
We will start off by discussing our reading identities. We will look for commonalities in our favorite books, determine how we can do our best reading, learn about our classroom library and how to care for our books properly, how to stay focused on our reading, and how to think and talk about the books that we read.
SPELLING
There will be no spelling homework the first or second week of school. Spelling homework will be described in detail to the students and parents when the time comes to begin. The students will be responsible for one spelling homework assignment per week due on Thursday, and they will be given a test on Friday. The students should be practicing their spelling words each night. Spelling words will also be conveniently uploaded onto a website called "Spelling City" in which the students can practice and play games with each week's words. Spelling City can be accessed through the "Resources" link to the left.
WRITING
In writing, we will begin by learning how to write elaborative segments on a beautiful season.... FALL!!! We will learn and practice how good writers incorporate lots of juicy and descriptive details.
SCIENCE
We will be learning about matter! Solids, liquids, and gases will be abundant in our science vocabularies. Get ready to learn about words like transparent, opaque, flexible, rigid, and even viscous!
This year, we will learn about an assortment of things like the Constitution, different communities, Veteran's Day, and we will even read many biographies about people who have helped to change our world. We will also be reading Scholastic News, which is a weekly newspaper that focuses on non-fiction reading and current events.
I can't wait to see you all very soon!!!
Warm Regards,
Miss Barrows
